A friend said Umbria's Pizza was the ultimate pizza. I asked him if he had been to Punch's and how it compared. He said that he did and Punch's rated a 7 and Umbria's was a 10. Wow! Pizza preferences are intensely personal but still that was high praise and I had to try it, even though I hadn't been to Punch's yet.
Since having that slice of cheese pizza at Mamma Pina's in Pittsburgh, the best pizza I ever had, I realized the true Litmus test of a good pizza was a slice of plain cheese pizza, no toppings to disguise the taste of the foundational crust, tomato sauce, and cheese. And so it was that I ordered a slice of Cheese Pizza ($4.25) at Umbria.
In the display case was a slice of pizza to show you a slice is about a quarter of a medium pizza. What you get when you order a slice is a whole pie as pictured above.
So how was it? It didn't meet my friend's hype. Not even close. The pizza crust was soft, doughy, and airy with just a hint of crispiness on the bottom. The tomato sauce was a bit overtangy. The cheese or something else made the pizza too salty. The first quarter slice was OK but the saltiness became too much with the second slice.
Overall, the pizza wasn't bad but I would say it is overpriced at $4.25. I would rate it at about the same quality of a Pizza Hut pizza, maybe just a notch higher. That's not to say its bad because I do like Pizza Hut pizza but it wasn't quantum leaps above.
As far as I can tell, Umbria's is a local chain. I haven't had that much pizza in the Twin Cities but I have to say the other pizza's I have had (reviews in this blog) in the Cities so far have been better.

I agree we had the buffet here it was not good!! Cold and the pizza had been sitting out for hours for 2 buffets it cost $21.00 very overpriced with little to offer. The dough tasted like it was from a can and was like dust when you bit in to it. Probably beacuse it had been out for so long under the warmer. This place was a rip off.
